Interviews can be mentally taxing.
Strangers walk in and out, nonstop. They walk in and drop half-truths. Sometimes, they hide the truth. Or they inflate their credentials. They couldn’t go in depth when you probed. But you never call their bluff.
Perhaps… you want your interviewer to be kind when you are in the hot seat. Perhaps.
It can be genuinely boring. Everyone engaged in the Big Dance knows how to play the game. They know the correct things to say. I know what to expect.
And it doesn’t help.
The closed-door meeting
James [my HR director] and I had a bicker before a 3-hour interview session.
I lamented that we are wasting our time on pretences and well-polished responses. Everyone has a 5-year plan. Tell me about you gives them room to demonstrate eloquence in articulation, nothing more. Why join us never elicited an honest response.
