Are You Spiritually Gaslighting?

You might be if you’re repeating these 3 ideas as absolute truth.

Over a decade on my spiritual path, I’ve come to see a trend among spiritual seekers. I call it “spiritual gaslighting.” It’s sometimes directed at other spiritual people, but most often at those who have not embraced some of the main principles of New Age spirituality.

Gaslighting, as you likely already know, is essentially a form of psychological manipulation in which you make someone else question their understanding of reality by imposing your version of the truth. It’s derived from the 1944 film Gaslight, in which a husband convinces his wife that she is going insane.

The spiritual version of gaslighting performs a similar kind of manipulation by imposing the spiritual person’s beliefs on another person. They do so by attributing that person’s struggles with issues like health or money to their spiritual inadequacy, often by suggesting that their “vibrational frequency” is too “low.” The message is, in essence, if you’re experiencing a problem with your health or wealth, it’s because you haven’t advanced enough spiritually.

Here are 3 forms of spiritual gaslighting that ought to be called out if they happen to you or you ought to reconsider if you’re the one performing them.
