Are You Too Busy to Stop Being Busy

Do you spend all your time being busy, being busy

I went for a long walk this morning.

Nothing special about that you might think?

Except that, back in the day, I would have told myself I was too busy to spend time walking. I had work to do. And lots of it.

I was too busy to stop being busy.

Belinda was burned out. As she said, she’d reluctantly scheduled time out of her ‘busy diary’ to come and see me and spent the first ten minutes shaking her foot and tapping the side of the chair with her fingers.

She also talked at a million miles an hour.

Slowly, she settled and let out a breath so long it sounded as if a kettle had reached boiling point.

“I can’t slow down, I have no off button but I never see my children and I haven’t had sex with my husband for so long, I can’t even remember what goes where.”

I was pleased to see Belinda was capable of joking as so many burned-out clients I see present as mechanically as an AI. Or even less so now that Synths are programmed with humour.

Why is it that Belinda and others reach a point of exhaustion? When did being busy become a status symbol?
