Change the Damn Toilet Paper Roll
My Top Two Productivity Hacks to Master Time
If anyone were to take a look at my work area or watch me bounce from one thing to another as I try to get things done, you would think I’m the poster girl for a time management intervention.
I have a bonafide case of ADD.
It’s time to harness the monkeys 🐒 in my brain and remind us all of my top two productivity hacks
If you can do it in under two minutes, do it now.
Change the damn toilet paper roll as soon as it runs out. Put the dirty dishes in the dishwasher when you’re done eating. Make your bed as soon as you get up. Put your clothes away when you take them off.
The two minute rule works great for the small things that we encounter throughout the day. While most of them are not urgent, when we let them stack up, they lead to chores that we dread doing.
I don’t want those little things to take me hours to get done on the weekend, and I get really frustrated wasting time looking for something that isn’t where it should be.
I stick with the 2 minute rule except when the next rule is in place….
Set a timer when you have to get something done.
What does a little kid do if you say something like,
“show me how many sticks you can pick up in one minute!….I’m going to time you!….ready, set, go!!!”
They run like crazy to pick up as many sticks as they can.
If you have something you need to get done, set a timer.
While the timer is running, you don’t work on anything except your chosen task.
For big tasks, break them down into manageable chunks, and set a timer for each of them.
I like to set my timer for one hour or less. Anything longer and I get too tempted to wander off to do something else.
When the timer goes off, I can switch to a different task (and set a new timer), or I can take a break and go for a walk, or stretch, or play with my dogs, etc.
As always, I wish you all the best!
