Direction Is More Important Than the Destination

I don’t recall where I read this quote, but I remember the feeling I had at the moment. “Direction is more important than the destination.” I’m not sure why this message triggered my anxiety, but it did, has.

Logically I understand why this would be pinned on your mirror and chanted during meditation. It reminds us that if you set a goal, you should move forward to achieve it. It could be messy, but as long as you are moving, you’re progressing.

But what if you don’t know which way to go? How do you navigate without a compass and the necessary tools to do so?

For me, the answer comes from

(who I don’t think writes on anymore), who wrote,

Destination is to goals as direction is to habits.

Now, this, I can get down with. Maybe it’s me, but setting big goals is intimidating. As a high achiever, I’m programmed to “go big or just stop.” The big audacious goals I’ve set trigger anxiety and become more burdensome than they are motivational. Falling short of a lofty goal is discouraging, and instead of propelling me forward, it pushes me into a defeatist cycle.
