How Our Money Mindset Evolves Over Time
Transforming Financial Perspectives: Valuable Lessons from Sarina Chiu’s Journey

Meet Sarina Chiu, a global citizen who has lived and worked across Hong Kong, Canada, Japan, and Australia. For me, she embodies the spirit of chasing dreams.
Her narrative is not just her own; it’s a story of resilience, bold choices, and the relentless pursuit of a better life. From the comfort of her childhood in Hong Kong to the bold leap into self-employment, Sarina’s journey is a lesson in evolving one’s money mindset and embracing change.
Her writing, both relatable and inspiring, shares the raw experiences of a woman who understands the depths of anxiety, imposter syndrome, and the courage it takes to face them head-on.
I interviewed her and invite you to join me as we explore her story, where every twist and turn embodies the mantra:
It’s never too late to turn your life around.
PAST
Sarina grew up in Hong Kong, enjoying a comfortable childhood with all comforts imaginable including a stay-at-home maid.
“Why do people worry about money?” she used to wonder.
Her parents shielded her from their financial struggles, but reality hit when the bubble burst, and her father lost a significant amount of money during an economic downturn and her mother nearly got hit by a car.
Life is fragile.
Be prepared for anything it may throw at you.
Influenced by her mother, Sarina became an excellent saver, learning to prioritize needs over wants. However, she internalized a lesson early on — never to invest in the stock market because it may “kill families.”
Despite this, Sarina managed to get well paying jobs and save enough to buy property, which is an investment in its own right.
Reflecting on her earlier days, she now sees them as her “no money worries” period, coasting towards her 40s without much concern.
