I Don’t Know What to Title This Article
…But it’s about compost, EVs, solar panels, raising kids, and doing what you can to live a good life
“One does not act rightly toward one’s fellows if one does not know how to act rightly toward the earth.”
— Liberty Hyde Bailey, The Holy Earth
I spent the day at a compost site operator’s workshop. I don’t own a commercial operation but have been a backyard composter for years and am planning to expand to include a few families in my town. We’re also establishing a community garden.
At the workshop, we discussed the various ways to compost — the bay/bin method, aerated static piles, windrows — then visited an operation to take samples of batches in various stages and see the process first hand. (I recommend this book if you’re interested in composting!)
(Also, a note to strict vegans: most vegetable growing farms, even organic farms, are using feedstocks from barn clean-outs, animal mortality, and various meat and dairy from college campuses, large businesses, and other food waste suppliers.)
