I don’t find the Financial Independence, Retire Early [FIRE] movement particularly attractive.

Don’t get me wrong. I understand why it exists. The apex driving force [in my opinion] stems from a quiet desperation to escape the tyranny of the workplace.

In short, we are dying to fire the tyrants in suits and ties. Next, we yearn to live a life we can control. Lastly, we retire [as early and young as possible] when we hit our magic number.

There is nothing wrong with that. Not at all. I [completely] agree.

So… what is the problem?

“FI and RE are 2 different things. Don’t mix them up.”

It was a hot and humid afternoon. I was having lunch with Jamie, a college friend I had never met for years. We started our conversation with college, then career, then into FIRE.

She graduated from B-School and made her way to private banking.
