Mencius and My Mother’s Love

I will believe, with Mencius,
that my inherent nature is to love,
as it is the inherent nature of water
for it to flow downstream.This I will believe
when I come to believe
that my mother’s love so flows
— that she is as Water.And Water, Lao Tzu proclaimed,
is as close as we can ever come
to understanding the Tao.My mother as Water,
my mother as the Tao.
