Dad was a hard worker in his prime.

Of course. Dad must. My mother was a full-time homemaker. I was studying. The 3 of us relied on his only source of income. It was stressful for Dad.

To begin with, Dad hated his job.

He used to be an insurance agent selling life policies. He didn’t make it. Mum gave him hell as time passed because expenses and bills must be paid.

She got him a job at Airport Services moving cargo.

And Dad was stuck there for 22 years.

The idea of retirement kept him alive

I don’t mean biologically.

Our household’s financial situation improved when Dad gave up his aspiration to become a top insurance guy. That was his dream. He told me about it [routinely] when I was fiddling with Lego bricks.

“Dreams and ambitions keep you happy, my boy.”

In truth, I understood next to nothing. I was half walking, half crawling. My days were packed with fun assembling and dissembling things. What would I know?
