My Revolutionary Self-Love Tool

Love the crap out of yourself in just one easy step

I love me.

My first memory of the power of love was when I was in the 5th grade. Two kids were circling me on the playground and ganging up on me with mean words and threats of potential fisticuffs. For reasons I’m not sure of, my ten-year-old self just sat on the school bench calmly eating my apple, watching them as they circled me. And before I knew it, these words came out of my mouth…

I love you.

This unexpected love bomb freaked out the little bullies so much they didn’t know what to do with themselves! It was as if I sucker punched them straight in the kisser. One of them finally said, What did you say? So, I repeated,
I love you. The other one said, You’re so weird. Then they walked away and never bothered me again.

When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace.

My Self-Love Tool — Letters

I’ve written love letters to myself since I can remember.

Somehow I figured out that if I needed a pep talk the most consistent place to get that sort of thing would be from myself. I mean, I’m always around. I can’t seem to shake me! Everywhere I look — there I am. Also, since I wrote the letters not thinking that I would ever share them, I feel like they couldn’t be truer. If they were meant for my eyes only, I wouldn’t feel the need to hide. I wouldn't need to pretend.

I’m sharing this with you because I feel very close to you and we are obviously BFFs now. Also, maybe it will inspire you to write yourself a letter of love and encouragement. Put it in an envelope and keep it inside your favorite book. Go to it when you need a little lift. You will thank you.

Dear Annie,

Hi! First off, you’re looking fantastic! Please, don’t worry about those few extra pounds and that huge zit on the tip of your nose that comes back every month, like evil clockwork. It’s a waste of your energy to think too much about that stuff. You have better things to do. And you know what, you’re doing them! I know you don’t think you’re doing things right all the time or that you’re doing enough. I know you don’t think your life is where it should be by now but I promise you, as long as you keep showing up and as long as you keep paying attention to what feels right, you will be led to beautiful things for your life and for those around you. Please don’t get too down in the dumps. God or The Universe would not have created you with all of your unique abilities and put you here on this planet if you weren’t meant to be here and be you in all of your glory. So quit putting so much pressure on yourself to achieve. Remember that Rumi quote you like: What you seek is seeking you. Trust that. Trust me. I mean, you. I mean, us. It takes courage to put yourself out there like you do. To get up after each failure, to continue to believe in yourself after each rejection and to love so deeply after each goodbye.
I’m so proud of you. Keep going.

Love always and forever and ever amen,

Annie
