Imagine it’s you. You’ve been so looking forward to the birth of your first baby. You’ve had many appointments along the way, and all seems well.

But then you get the call. Your baby has Down Syndrome.

And your world just gets a little less sunny.

Tears flow, and you rail against the unfairness of it all.

It takes a while to become positive. Much of that is due to the attitude of people around you, when they hear the news.

I am so sorry.

What can I do to help?

Will you manage?

Have you considered…?

At a time when you should be bonding with your new little person, you are instead, called to believe that your child is just a little wanting.

But things do get better. One day you turn a corner and realize that having a DS child is not a death sentence.

That first little smile did it, you know, the one we with ‘normal’ children look out for! It makes you sit up and take notice.
