Ela Manga once said: “Anxiety is a conversation between something that is happening and something that wants to happen.”

Once I realised I was a part of that conversation everything changed.

I began to feel more empowered and less powerless. I learned that I could control my breathing, hum, sing, and shake whenever I felt anxious. And I learned to share my experiences to soften its grip on my heart and psyche.

Here are seven quotes that helped me along the way.

“When we attempt to exercise power or control over someone else, we cannot avoid giving that person the very same power or control over us” – Alan Watts

The same is true with anxiety.

Whenever I try and control it it only grows fiercer and more rigid.

It’s only when I surrender and let go of control does it ease because it has nothing to hold onto.

It’s a counterintuitive movement but somehow it works.

“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response” — Viktor Frankl
