How to Manage Your Expectations and Avoid Disappointment at All Cost
"Expectation is the root of all heartache."—William Shakespeare
Perhaps you’ve heard the saying: “If you expect nothing from somebody, you are never disappointed.”
That quote rings true, and I’m sure we’ve all had at least one story about feeling let down by someone. But the more interesting question is, how often do you let yourself down by setting high expectations of yourself?
Growing up, I’ve been told so many times that “if you believe in yourself and work hard enough, you can become anything you want in life.” For a long time, I believe this holds true for everyone.
Unfortunately, reality begs to differ.
When we graduate from college, we expect to land our dream job, but the reality is a whopping 47% of UK graduates are in non-graduate jobs.
When we finally land a job, we expect to work in a field we’re passionate about, but the fact is that 50% of graduates are doing something that bears no relation to their degree.
Not only we don’t get what we expect, most people just end up mired in mediocrity. Life is a matter of happy accidents, anomalies, and chance. We rarely get what we want and instead end up in places we don’t expect.
