The Secret to Happiness Is to Be Out of Your Mind, in the Right Way

I don’t mean that you have to be spaced out on drugs or alcohol. I mean that you need to be “not thinking” and not allowing your mind to get in the way of your happiness. But how do you do that?

Just for a moment, bring to mind an image of the audience at a rave concert. They are all dancing and jigging about, waving their arms in the air, swaying to the music and looking deliriously happy. Why? Because the music totally absorbs them.

What the music has done is it has transported them out of their minds into a world that is totally of the moment. All these people can do is be where they are in the present moment. They are not bothered by thoughts of their mortgages, what is happening at work, or what their boss might say on Monday morning. Their only concern is what is happening at the moment. They are out of their ordinary minds — and they are happy.

The happiness fallacy

There’s a lot of guff in the literature about how to make yourself happy. It’s as if the authors think you can somehow make yourself happy. But happiness doesn’t work like that.

Happiness is a state of being that is brought about by something happening. People pay to go to concerts and raves because what happens at the event transports them out…
