It’s no secret that countries like Denmark, Finland, and Norway live happier lives than their U.S. counterparts.

Sure, maybe part of their happiness stems from a better relationship with capitalism and lower rates of social inequality.

But it also stems from their workplace and social culture.

Introducing the Swedish Fika.

What is the Swedish fika

Fika is the social custom of sharing coffee and some sweet treats with friends.

Swedes will take a mandatory break during their workday to rest and relax over a cup of coffee and some pastries with friends. This is a fantastic way to boost social bonding between workers and helps reset their energy, allowing them to return to work fresh.

“It has been described as a social institution or even phenomena. Swedish people — often described as distant, calm and unsocial — love their fika. It gives them the opportunity to meet and hang out with friends, get to know new people, check out potential partners or network with business folks.”

Lucky for those of us outside of Sweden, we can take notes on how to fika and use them in our everyday lives to find more…
