There’s Nowhere to Go but Forward… If You Dare to Walk
In praise of first times
The first time we drive a car, have sex, go to a new job, go to a party alone, go on a new date, share something vulnerable publicly, take the mic, you name it. The time between thinking of doing something and actually doing it for the very first time is a magical time.
So much romance, and expectations. Since we haven’t experienced it yet, it becomes the perfect territory for our minds to go crazy and feed us with fears, with inertia, with overthinking.
What if I am too nervous, what if I don’t speak, what if I don’t sound smart? So many concerns allow our minds to lose the proportion of things. By making things bigger than they are, and filling them with what could go wrong, we give up on things before we even try. Why look for a new job and put ourselves out there? Why change life completely when I have no idea what it means to live differently, more playfully and with more pleasure?
But why not?
The first time we do something new it is nothing but a trial. It’s like putting the toes in the water — but not the whole foot. Was your best orgasm over your first sexual experience? Were you in love with playing the piano after just one class?
