What Impact Will You Make in Your Generation?
Would you fold your arms or take action?
I went out to protest yesterday because of the things happening in Nigeria, and in the morning before leaving, I had doubts about attending because of the news about the killings and injuries of protesters. Although the night before, I was all pumped up, but the morning came, and it was a different story. I actually developed cold feet.
I was supposed to go with a bunch of friends, but they backed out at the last minute. This shook my morale a bit, but I didn’t want to let myself down because I won’t have been happy staying at home.
I wanted to be involved. I wanted to lend my voice because I, too, have been personally affected by the situation, so it didn’t make sense to sit at home.
One thing that kept pushing me to keep going was the topic sentence: What impact will you make in your generation?
How I see it is, every generation has its battles to fight. In Nigeria, one generation fought for Independence, then the other lost the battle to corrupt leaders, and we’ve been suffering from structural failures ever since.
This present generation of Nigerian youths are trying to do all the can to fight against everything wrong with this country. And this #endsars movement is a definite beginning to a change in the country because, as the famous saying goes: United we stand, divided we fall.
We’re obviously not divided, so we can battle whatever we face if we can remain united.
We simply need to maintain our one voice, and we’re halfway there.
This is how the present administration will try to fight us — by dividing us — to cause confusion. It’s already happening, but obviouly, we’re stronger than ever, and it’s a threat to them.
The battle is between them and us. But they’ll try to change the narrative to make you believe otherwise. But it’s up to you to take a stand.
Are you going to fold your arms and believe what they feed you, or come out to fight for the future of your children?
One time, my uncle said, “power isn’t given; it’s taken.” And that statement has stuck with me ever since.
I started to understand that these people will continue taking us for a ride if we don’t stand up to demand what is ours.
It was so bad that I started to give up on the system because of how much they’ve failed us, but seeing young people like me come together to demand their rights, awakened something in me. And I believe we’re headed towards a better Nigeria.
But a better Nigeria starts with you. Would you keep quiet and watch these people take us for a ride or stand up and fight?
It’s up to you!
Thank you for reading.
