Introduction

If I had to pick only one interview question to ask candidates for the rest of my life, it would be this (three-in-one!):

What is the hardest thing you ever willfully endured, why did you do it, and what did you learn?

To some people, signing up for a physical race of any kind — be it an adventure race, a single sport event, or a multi-sport event — sounds like torture. To others, it sets a deadline and a goal, which, in turn, forces training, prioritization, and dedication… or bust on race day.

For the strong of mind, long, grueling races in the wild yonder are playgrounds — a place to challenge your physical self, your mind, and find meaning — a connection to your ‘why.’ That mentality is delightfully contagious, which is why I’d sneak in a follow-up question:
