Most known for informing AA’s twelve steps and traditions, and having a radical approach to spirituality, it was founded by Frank Buchman, an American Lutheran minister in 1921. Its original name was First Century Christian Fellowship.

Buchman believed that fear and selfishness were the root of everyone’s problems, even nations.’ And that the solution was to surrender one’s life to God’s plan.

They left it up to individuals to explore and define God for themselves. Quiet Time was encouraged as a way to connect with and discern God’s will. They were truly ecumenical, not subscribing to any specific religion and welcoming everyone.

Not an Organization, Not a Religion

According to Wikipedia:

One could not “belong” to the Oxford group for it had no membership list, badges, or definite location. It was simply “a group of people from all walks of life who have surrendered their life to God”. Their endeavor was to lead a spiritual life “under God’s Guidance” and their purpose was to carry their message so others could do the same. (Wikipedia)
