What’s Your Story?
Do people listen when you tell it?
About a year ago, a friend reached out to me for help.
His dad was a big deal in the community where we grew up, and the man was retiring. My friend had to make a speech as the first child.
Of course, he had a speech written out about how wonderful his dad is. But it was more like a list than a speech. So, he reached out to me.
He made a smart decision by reaching out. I had to rewrite the entire thing.
I started with a story he told me a few years before, of when they were kids. Instead of listing all the attributes he used to describe his dad, I just wrote stories and scenarios that highlighted those attributes.
I wasn’t so sure he appreciated what I did for him initially.
But when everybody heard his speech, they showered him with compliments about it. Of course, he couldn’t tell them that he didn’t write it lol.
Of course, I was okay with that. It wasn’t my story. But that incident really opened my eyes to how powerful stories are.
