How fear motivated me
I was born near London at a time when the city was being bombed every night. The crunching noise of bombs landing all around and adults constantly talking about houses destroyed and people killed was the background sound of my earliest years. I was surrounded by fear; no wonder it became a default.
Then, when I was seven, I was sent away to a boarding school where I was disciplined with the cane constantly. I was unruly and fearful when I left school at age 16. I had no idea what to do with my life.
