ELIZABETHON, Tenn. — Chenar Brown, Ryan Carr and Daniel Hicks hit home runs, Brown drove in a game-high four RBIs and the Danville Otterbots scored three or more runs in three innings in their 12–6 lambasting of the Elizabethton River Riders Friday night in Appalachian League action.
Hicks hit a solo shot to left field to knot the score at 1-all in the top of the fifth and Brown followed with a three-run blast of his own to center that capped a four-run frame that gave Danville a 4–1 lead heading into the bottom half.
Carr smacked a two-run shot to left that put the Otterbots in front 9–2 in the top of the eighth.
Danville (28–24) held a 4–2 lead going into the seventh, but the ‘Bots didn’t sit on their laurels, adding a trio of runs in the frame to break open the contest. An Elizabethton error on Brown’s grounder to third base scored Carr and Carter Sanford (South Alabama) made it a four-run game when he scored on a River Riders error. During the same at-bat, Talmadge LeCroy (South Carolina) gave the Otterbots a 7–2 cushion with his double to center.
Carr’s two-run dinger in the eighth made it a 9–2 contest heading into the final inning-and-a-half.
Elizabethton (26–21) struck back in its half of the eighth with a trio of runs to trim its deficit to four. Jonathan Soto (Rogers State) got the scoring started with his two-run double to center and Deric Grahm closed the gap to 9–5 with his RBI sacrifice flyout to left.
The Otterbots put the game away with a three-run top of the ninth. LeCroy scored on a wild pitch to start things off and Jevin Relaford (Santa Fe) worked a bases-loaded walk to make it a 10–5 contest. Josh Wooten scored on a Carr ground ball and Hicks came home on a wild pitch that gave Danville a 12–5 lead entering the final frame.
Michael Robinson brought in the River Riders’ final run with his RBI sacrifice fly to left in the bottom of the ninth that led to the final score.
Elizabethton drew first blood, using Augustus Fraley’s run-scoring sac fly to take the early 1–0 lead.
Brown led the ‘Bots with four RBIs on a pair of hits, while Carr drove in two runs on a game-high three hits. LeCroy and Hicks drove in an RBI apiece for Danville.
Soto and Robinson led Elizabethton with two RBIs apiece.
Starter Carter Holjes (UNCW) got the win on the bump, scattering three hits and a run, while striking out six in five innings pitched. Jake Crawford (Cumberland) threw two innings of one-hit, one-run relief, while Ford Lad (NYU) closed out the final two frames.
Danville concludes its inaugural season tomorrow night against Elizabethton. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
