CHATHAM, Va. — Junior Jake Moore cranked a three-run, home run and drove in five runs, sophomore Alex Van Pelt added a two-run, home run and Chatham cruised to an 11–1 victory over Gretna in five innings of Dogwood District action Monday night.
Moore finished a perfect 3-for-3 and scored a pair of runs as well for the Cavaliers.
Moore helped the ‘Cavs get off to an early start, driving in junior Kendell Sanders with his RBI single to center field that made it a 1–0 game in the first inning. He doubled down on Chatham’s lead when he scored on sophomore Zander Cornell’s run-scoring ground out.
Senior Cam Satterfield gave the Cavaliers a four-run cushion in the second when he smacked a double to left that scored sophomore Kennen Lewis and Moore made it 5–0 with his RBI single to right that plated Sanders.
The ‘Cavs took a six-run lead on junior Carrington Aaron’s run-scoring single to right in the fourth and Moore pushed Chatham’s cushion to nine with his three-run dinger to center. Van Pelt rounded out the scoring for the Cavaliers when he smacked a two-run shot to left that scored Cornell and made it an 11–0 contest.
Jackson Moore drove in Gretna’s lone run with his double to center in fifth.
Moore drove in a game-high five runs for Chatham (12–5, 7–2 Dogwood) while Satterfield and Van Pelt drove in a pair of runs as well. Aaron and Cornell recorded an RBI apiece as well. Sanders scored three runs.
Junior Austin Whitlow threw four innings of two-hit, shutout ball while striking out five.
Chatham returns to action Wednesday when it travels to Naruna, Virginia, for a Dogwood matchup against William Campbell at 5:30 p.m.
Gretna (4–13, 3–5) returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Dan River on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
