LOVINGSTON, Va. — Dan River senior Emily McVay threw a four-hit, shutout, freshman McKenzie McVay drove in four runs and Dan River avenged an earlier loss to Nelson County with a 5–0 win over the Governors in Dogwood District action Wednesday night.

A close game throughout, the Wildcats stole the momentum late, scoring three runs in the seventh to lead to the final score. Senior Rebekah Stowe got the two-out rally going with her single to center field and senior Katie Moser followed with a base hit of her own to put runners on first and second base. Emily McVay loaded the bases when she reached on an error on her ground ball and McKenzie McVay cleared them with a double to right that made it a 5–0 contest.

Dan River (12–2, 5–2 Dogwood) broke a scoreless tie in the fourth. Junior Emma Williams reached third on a two-out error on her fly ball to right and freshman Lila DeMott kept the ball rolling with her RBI single to right that made it 1–0.

The Wildcats never relinquished the lead, scoring another run in the sixth courtesy of McKenzie McVay’s lead-off home run to left that gave the ‘Cats a 2–0 lead.

Moser and McKenzie McVay led Dan River as Moser smacked three hits and McKenzie McVay drove in four runs on two hits, including her home run. DeMott finished with two hits.

Emily McVay went the distance in the circle, scattering four hits and striking out 10.

Nelson County (7–5, 5–2) was led by sophomore Chandler Giles’ two hits.

Dan River returns to action Friday when it hits the road for a crucial Dogwood matchup against Appomattox County at 5:30 p.m.
