DANVILLE, Va. — Jevin Relaford drove in a pair of runs to lead the Danville Otterbots to a 3–1 victory over the Burlington Sock Puppets in a rubber match contest on Sunday afternoon at Dan Daniel Park.
Corbin Lanowitz (UNC Asheville) led off the bottom of the second inning with an infield single and Ryan Carr (NYU) followed with a walk to give the Otterbots runners on first and second base with no outs. After a strikeout helped Burlington record its first out, Cam Murphy (UNC Wilmington) delivered a one-out single that loaded the bases. Two batters later, Relaford stepped up and smacked a two-run single to center field that gave the ‘Bots a 3–0 lead.
Danville (10–7) got off to the early lead thanks to Luke Stephenson’s RBI triple that plated Relaford to give the Otterbots a 1–0 lead. After turning in a big game against the ‘Bots Saturday night, Ryan McCrystal (East Carolina) continued his impressive series with an RBI sacrifice fly in the third that pulled Burlington (14–3) within two at 3–1.
The Sock Puppets seemed poised to strike in the fifth when Dante Girardi (Calvary Christian) smacked a one-out single to right and McCrystal followed with a walk two batters later to put the tying runs on base for Burlington. However, Sawyer Osborne (Surry CC) induced a groundout to end the threat and keep the ‘Bots in front by a pair.
Relaford paced Danville with a pair of RBIs while Stephenson (Elon) drove in a run as well.
Girardi led Burlington with a pair of hits.
Osborne picked up the win on the bump, throwing two innings of one-hit, shutout relief. Starter Kenny Keller (College of the Desert) struck out three in three innings of work while Brock Duff (Virginia-Wise) got the save after closing out the seventh.
Danville gets a day rest before returning to action on Tuesday on the road at 7 p.m. against Johnson City.
