How I Forced Myself into a Daily Workout Routine

I have ADHD, I get bored, I had to hack myself

“How did you create a consistent workout routine?” I was asked recently, after I had commented on that day’s workout.

I rolled my eyes and replied, “My answer sucks.”

“The truth is, my workout is just a non-negotiable.”

I continued to elaborate, “On days when I don’t feel like exercising, I typically start later, but as the morning progresses and I haven’t worked out, the feeling of responsibility pushes me.”

Of course, as I gave that useless answer for someone who is trying to get started, I got thinking about the beginning of the habit.

My Workout Habit — The Early Days

I had to start somewhere and what helped me get started was:

  • Smart Technology — An Apple Watch with its exercise rings and streaks
  • Self Awareness — Noticing how much better I felt after consistently closing those rings for a few weeks
  • Convenience — Making my workouts all happen “around” walking or my treadmill.
