The Chapter by Chapter publication wants to help writers focus on writing one chapter at a time. This post will share a simple process to follow to get you started on writing your book serially.

Create a book cover

Free tools, like Canva, can help you create a book cover in minutes. They have many free templates available that are high in quality.

Create a landing page

We recommend creating a landing page that will show the following:

• The book title and subtitle
• The book cover
• A foreword introducing you and the book
• A table of contents with links to published chapters

You may add any other book front matter content like copyright information and about the author.

A table of contents will allow you to share one post with all the published and draft chapters. This will make it easier for readers to find the chapters for your book.

Every time you publish a chapter, update your landing page.

Monetizing your chapters

If you are in the Medium Partner program or planning to join it, you will earn royalties when paid Medium members read your posts and when someone signs up with your referral link.

We suggest the following metering (i.e., premium posts eligible for royalties) strategy:

• Make the landing page unmetered/free
• Make the first one to three chapters unmetered/free
• Make the following chapters metered/premium

With this strategy, readers can find your book and read some of it for free. They can read up to five paid chapters for free as they continue reading chapters. After that, Medium will show a referral link for unsubscribed readers, allowing you to earn a referral bonus if they sign up for a Medium membership. Members with a paid membership can continue reading, and you will earn royalties based on their reading time.

This approach is a win-win-win strategy:

• Unsubscribed readers win by reading chapters for free
• Subscribed readers can read an entire book at no additional cost
• You earn a royalty for member’s reading time and referral sign-ups

Promoting your writing

At the end of every post, have a “Before you go” section that should have the following:

• Link to the landing page
• Link to the previous and next chapters
• Paste a link to your Medium email newsletter (Note: Medium will convert it to a lovely link banner like the one below. You can get the link from your publishing settings)
• Suggest they follow you and the publication so they stay up to date
