The Short Sale · Chapter 5 · Walking to the Lab
After receiving the bad news, the hallways seemed darker, longer, and narrower to Mike. He had been looking forward to being part of a red team. The red team was responsible for hacking into a system. The blue team was responsible for stopping hackers from breaking in, minimizing the damage when they did break in, and closing their entry points as soon as possible. Mike was more interested in breaking in rather than being a defender. But he missed his chance to learn with the best.
As he walked and moped down the hallway, someone yelled, “Hey, buddy.” Mike turned around in surprise. He saw his former mentor, who encouraged him to consider cybersecurity before it became a company focus. “It’s been a long while since we’ve had a mentor lunch. Do you want to meet for lunch today?”
Mike replied, “Sorry, but I can’t.”
“Do you still want to continue our mentoring relationship? I mean, it’s been almost a year since we met to discuss.”
“I’m sorry. I feel like I’m wasting your time. Maybe we should call it off.”
Ajay’s face widened with surprise. He was not expecting Mike to give that answer. Ajay was trying to use reverse psychology, hoping that Mike would realize that the mentoring meetings might help him get back on track. Mike had such a promising career before the…
