The African continent is currently the continent of promise with millions of entrepreneurial ventures being kick-started in the continent and a lot of multinationals trying to gain market from its growing economies. However, the continent has always been lagging in its adoption of technological trends in the Americas, Europe, and Asia outdoing it in their flexibility, innovation, and transition to new technology. One affected market has been the blockchain market whose adoption has been scarce continentally as only Ghana, Rwanda, and South Africa cared about the field before Kenya backed blockchain early yesterday (This article was written on 2ndMarch 2018 at 0143h SAST). While most could blame this slow adoption on limited infrastructure continentally, reluctant reception of new ideas and trends by Africans cannot be ignored.

How is African Blockchain Initiative shaping blockchain adoption?

African Blockchain Initiative (ABI), founded on 5th February 2018, is one of the few enterprises dedicated to improving the state of blockchain adoption in Africa. At the moment, out of South Africa, there are only 3 blockchain projects whereas Asia, Europe or the Americas boast of thousands. ABI achieves its vision and mission through education. The initiative’s goal is to “Shape Africa’s Blockchain Future” through enriching blockchain content and education. One of their key services is the Corporate Workshops where our team of blockchain enthusiasts runs 3 or 5-hour company workshops to introduce blockchain, smart contracts and help companies design blockchain solutions for their workspace or industry/sector.

How exactly does this Work?

The best way to create optimized blockchain solutions for companies is by having workers or experienced personnel in a particular field draft the void (blockchain opportunity window) of a particular space in their sector, industry or company before solution development is conducted. However, most adept workers in many industries in Africa lack apt exposure to blockchain and thus cannot participate in identifying the void to be filled by blockchain. This where the corporate workshops come in. ABI officials introduce the entire blockchain concept such that a particular industry’s professional can understand its potential for his/her company. After the blockchain understanding, through the guidance of blockchain officials, industry experts draft ideas of how blockchain could be utilized in their sector or company and ABI works hand in hand with the company to refine the ideas and design blockchain solutions perfect for a particular workspace. Finally, ABI links the company with external developers who develop the already designed solution and highly workspace optimized solution. It’s a simple three-step approach that seeks to get corporates on the blockchain: understand, draft ideas, design before link up to developers.

Where is ABI Operational?

The initiative is a continental initiative with a multi-prong approach to blockchain education. Check out their website to understand more about their tools and services (africanblockchaininitiative.com). However, the corporate workshops are available only in Kenya and South Africa. That means that companies in these countries can spearhead the adoption of blockchain continentally through this African Blockchain Initiative.
