Has Tableau Lost Its Mojo?

The Risks Of Being A Desktop Offering In Business Intelligence

There are two sides to most decisions. There are pros and cons. When you create a BI solution with a low cost of entry(no VP sign-off needed — just expense it), you can steal market (or in this case desktop) share readily enough. You may even duck the semi-annual budget tightening moves.

When you build a BI solution that is intuitively easy and light-weight to learn and develop with, you get quick uptake and results. You also run the risk of creating a lot of half-baked examples of reporting. You may be the perfect solution for right now, but damage your long term credibility.

Now I am not saying that is the case with Tableau, but it is certainly no longer the growth story it used to be. The mojo has faded. And so, one really should question where it goes from here? Does it have another chapter? Another market grab? Or will it just fade?

This season of BI Madness, it is falling behind Power BI with just a day or two left in the round. In prior years, it was a contender. Not so much any more. Folks I considered true artisans with the software are now hanging it up to work with other solutions. It is just not that fun anymore.

Perhaps like Austin Powers, Tableau will restore its mojo? Perhaps it will come so fast, it will seem it never lost it? But perhaps this is just the path for many desktop solutions. It certainly has been in other software areas. There is no real reason business intelligence should be an exception. Although, there is Excel… so again, maybe Tableau will be reborn?

But what about Tableau Server & Tableau Online? Isn’t it more than just a desktop tool these days? Yes, Tableau has attempted to create more of an online and collaborative cloud solution. It just doesn’t seem to have the same mojo as there initial product…
