Sorry, had to go there. They are not the same as Big Data. They may be HPC. Seems to me they are really just a sign of the times. Or perhaps we should blame Deep Learning?

I won’t deny it.
That is a lot of CPU. High powered computing meets the cloud at costs that make CIOs smile. And that kind of processing power could be really fun!
But baby we’re lazy.
While faster and cheaper, this will only make us dumb. Perhaps not Amazon, Facebook, and Google — but those racing to catch up aren’t likely to take the time to invest in the same foundation and infrastructure developed at those industry leaders.

Other infrastructure and analytic solutions have not kept pace. Those others rely less on technology and more on application. But then technology has always been easier, application hard! Think about the current debate around AI. Speaking of which…
Somewhere in the dark recesses of the “Artificial Intelligence Sells” movement — they are cheering. All that data. So much cheaper. So much more money in the budget to waste… errr, spend on the only thing capable of combing this much information — AI.
Don’t get me wrong Hyperscale Data Centers are interesting. They are likely the future. Perhaps the name will actually stick this time? Perhaps not? But technology tends to work best when aggregated with other advancing technologies. At the moment, Hyperscale Data Centers appear to be advancing well beyond many other technologies. Even the buzzword is a generation ahead.
As for all the other buzzwords — BI, Dataviz, Data Science, Predictive Analytics, and DDDM — good luck keeping up!
