Our reliance on technology has propelled modern society further than we’ve ever imagined it could, but it may surprisingly be doing more harm than good. Teenagers nowadays are basically addicted to their phones. We are no longer using technology to deal with the necessary conveniences, but are instead using it as a form of entertainment and it now takes up the majority of our everyday lives.

The time we used to spend time outside and playing games, is now spent inside as we scroll on social media for hours on end. While students used to look through libraries to look for sources for their school papers, they now find research on the internet.

When people could be spending quality time with each other, they now just text or FaceTime each other. In school, we now take tests and quizzes on our computers instead of on paper. While we are over-reliant on technology now, it has helped us in so many ways. It has allowed us to make so many advancements in science and in the medical field; it helped us to get to space.

But instead of just using technology to make progress, we use it all the time even for the most unnecessary of tasks. We play video games, watch TV shows and movies, and even share the highlights of our lives with the world. Because we use it so much, we grow attached to the reassurance we get from social media about our biggest insecurities, but it can also make our insecurities worse.

We compare our lives to the lives of others, whether it’s their looks, money, or love life, we get jealous of the people who get to live the lives that we want. So while technology does seem to have some benefits, if we grow too reliant on it and don’t use it in the proper way, it may have its consequences.
