Breastfeeding Product Recommendations — The Basics

One of the most beautiful things about breastfeeding is that all you really need is a mother with functioning breast tissue and a baby with a sucking reflex. There are, however, a variety of items that help make breastfeeding more comfortable, enjoyable, and easier.

Here are some great basics, that in my experience, many women select for comfort and sustainability.

Nursing Bras

Bravado Body Silk Seamless and Wire Free Nursing Bra
Retail: $49

This nursing bra is one of the most well made and comfortable nursing bras on the market. Designed for use from the end of pregnancy when women should move away from their now ill-fitting underwire bras to more flexible and supportive wireless bras. It’s easy to pick your size — S/M/L/XL and a table on the packaging to help figure it out. The fit and quality of this bra makes it a go-to must that will last as long as you’re breastfeeding — wash and wear and feed after feed.

Bravado Hands Free Nursing Bra
Retail: $30

This bra accessory pairs with the above Bravado Body Silk Seamless Nursing Bra. A hands free nursing bra is essential for frequent pumping and certainly return to work use of a double electric breast pump. You can absolutely learn to hold both flanges while you pump and have a free hand but in the mean time — this accessory makes ‘doing it all’ much easier.

Nursing Pads

Leaking breast milk is a normal part of lactating and happens frequently for first time moms or in the early days of breastfeeding. Your breast and nipples are getting synchronized with the baby’s needs and routines. You can use any extra milk to moisturize your nipples and let them air dry for healing and comfort. but otherwise here are some options for managing leaking.

Reusable — Bamboobies

Made with super-soft Bamboo Rayon, Cotton, and Hemp fabrics, these washable reusable breast pads are highly absorbent and very comfortable. Available in differing shapes and absorbency.

Disposable — Johnson & Johnson Contoured Disposable Nursing Pads

Paying extra for adhesive on nursing pads doesn’t make sense when the adhesive doesn’t stick well enough or you are in and out of your bra so many times they get misshapen and flimsy. These pads hold their shape fairly well, offer a great shape at that being contoured like the breast with a very appropriate indent for the nipple. “Feel like a natural Woman…”

Other basics to help make breastfeeding easier!

Milk Savers
If you find that you really leak a lot, switch to breast shells (see below) or these specialty nursing pads that collect the leaking milk so you can use it. And remember breastmilk can be safely stored in freezer for 5–6 months so you can use these small amounts collected to mix into cereal or table foods when your baby begins eating supplementary foods.

aden + anais Organic Burpy Bib
Breastfeeding can be a little messy in the beginning so it’s a good idea to have something absorbent on hand. Some babies spit up and others hardly ever. Speak with your pediatrician if you’re concerned or even just confused.
