Why do journalists need communities?
Digital Journalism Rocks founder Lina Timm talks about the need for knowledge exchange.
The Digital Journalism Rocks Slack community is more than 900 users (journalists, marketers, NGO workers, creative thinkers..) strong and is growing each day.
Founder Lina Timm, a program manager @MediaLabBayern, started the community, because she thought journalists in Europe need a place to talk to each other about all things digital and how it works.
“I built [the community] for journalists so that they can connect over all the things digital they want to talk about and like”
Why do we ned communities?
As Lina mentions in the Check Your Facts podcast, the idea to start a community was born when she was in the US and met with people in journalism, they were open and shared a lot of stuff and that inspired her.
She wanted something similar for journalists back at home (Europe) and she decided to do this project.
Most of the time there is one digitally savvy person in the newsroom and they do not have anyone to speak to about what is going on in digital journalism. The community connects these likeminded individuals and gives them place to connect and share ideas.
Conversation → Innovation
And with connecting and discussing what everyone is doing ideas are exchanged and people are inspired to innovate.
The exchange of the ideas and sharing your work to get feedback from your international peers makes such a community a thriving pool of inspiration and innovation.
I mean, that is how the Check Your Facts podcast started — me & Henrik Ståhl never met each other and now we are doing a weekly podcast focused on journalism and media related topics.
