A Night at the Aztec Theatre

If you haven’t been to the Aztec Theatre, located Downtown at St. Mary’s and East Commerce Street, you should call up tu novio or las chicas and plan a night out. This was my third visit, and there’s always something great going on. The Aztec’s lobby is stunning, with a fantastic grand chandelier, and old Hollywood-esque Meso-American design, it’s a sight you need to see.

I was there to see the Gin Blossoms, who put on an awesome concert. Before the show, we walked around a bit to take in the scenery. The second floor overlooks the huge lobby, and there are two staircases leading to the second floor where there are intimate lounge areas, murals, and other Aztec scenery.

The Aztec originally opened in 1926, and at one time, its chandelier was known as the largest in Texas, weighing in at three tons. It was two stories tall and twelve feet wide, according to Cinema Treasures.

When it first opened, the theatre offered stage shows, orchestras, and movies. The Aztec closed in the late 80’s and has been revived, remodeled, and re-opened at least three different times.

The theatre is now primarily a concert venue, but can be rented out for private events. It boasts a general admission capacity of 1500, according to the Aztec’s website.

I just love the Aztec Theatre and sincerely hope it will be around for many generations to enjoy it’s one-of-a-kind design!
