Work Out Help Out
I first met Bill Richardson at Big Brothers Big Sisters
(BBBS) when my little brother, Troy, and I were celebrating our three-year
Match Anniversary in May of 2017. Troy and I were asked to do a quick interview
about our experience with BBBS and we were more than happy to do so.
It was during this interview Bill introduced me to another non-profit, Work Out Help Out. I enjoy being active and volunteering, so I saw this as a fantastic match. I was excited about becoming involved and did so right away.
My first event was at a community garden downtown. There
were people there already there, but I was late because getting up on Saturdays
is tough for me to do. It doesn’t take founder and work-out leader, Paul, long
to get everyone motivated, however.
Paul begins by welcoming everyone, having them introduce
themselves to each other, and introducing the organization we are going to be
helping. We are assigned groups based on the tasks needing to be completed
whether it be painting, spreading mulch, planting, building picnic tables, or clearing
paths for hiking trails. While one group is exercising, usually for around 20
minutes, the other groups are working on the assigned tasks.
Also around are other Work Out Help Out staff members like Bill (who also serves as President), Karl, Eboni, Aaron, and Abby. We always enjoy getting to see each other and getting to spend time with the volunteers. Most importantly, we get to learn more about the local organizations working hard to improve the community like King’s Compassion, Ronald McDonald House, and Green Spaces Alliance, Eco Centro, and Phil Hardberger Park. You can follow Work Out Help Out on Facebook or sign up for events on the Work Out Help Out website.
