“Famous Collaborations.”

— What makes two or more people “get along famously”?

For all the lip-service paid to “team” as an (obvious) ingredient in success, do we really understand what makes for successful, productive collaborations? What makes two or more people “get along famously”?

In Thinking Fast And Slow, Daniel Kahneman attributes the origins (and Nobel-prize winning success) of his research to his collaboration with fellow academic Amos Tversky. Kahneman describes their chemistry with these stirring lines:

“The pleasure we found in working together made us exceptionally patient; it is much easier to strive for perfection when you are never bored. Perhaps most important, we checked our critical weapons at the door. Both Amos and I were critical and argumentative, he even more than I, but during the years of our collaboration neither of us rejected out of hand anything the other said. Indeed, one of the great joys I found in the collaboration was that Amos frequently saw the point of my vague ideas much more clearly than I did.”

I love the specifics mentioned:
+ Patience (14 year long collaboration)
+ Suspend judgement (because of mutual respect)
+ Brainstorm partners (building on each other’s ideas)

? What, in your experience, has worked? What hasn’t? Please share wisdom learned the hard way!
? Is this an ongoing area of inquiry for you personally? Or have you arrived at a framework you’re satisfied with?
? Have you found your collaborative soul mate(s) yet? Or are you still looking?
? Do you have any insight into other famous collaborations (Buffet and Munger) or failed collaborations (Tesla and Edison)?

This is definitely still an area of inquiry for me, and I look forward to sharing and exploring with you in the thread!
