Jasmina Kulaglich is a pianist based in Paris, France. Her first solo album “Byzantine Mosaic” (World premiere recording of Byzantine Mosaic composed by Svetislav Bozic [Belgrade] in 2001, and dedicated to Orthodox monasteries in the Balkans, [Naxos, 2012]) received some great reviews in France (ResMusica “To take away”) & Belgium (“Crescendo” 10/10).
She’s now preparing her second solo CD.
I dreamt of producing a collection of Russian pieces for a very long time and now, more than ever, I needed to make this recording. I recorded the music with the help of Belgian sound engineer Frédéric Briant (Decca, Virgin, …) at famous french piano maker Stephen Paulello’s studio on his very special piano ‘Opus 102’; the original design of the instrument lends itself perfectly for this Slavic program.
My inspiration comes from the beauty of the Slavic lands, a place that I call my home. Its deep emotions, strength, and courage all run through my blood, especially in this time of crisis which continues to motivate me even further. The pieces I have chosen for this work vary greatly; some are lyrical while others are filled with joy and show that happiness can be found even under the direst of circumstances. There are also some mischievous selections that will bring out the inner child in all of us.
Dumka refers to a unique variety of Slavic music, typically written in a melancholy, or sad style, interspersed with pieces full of life and joy… and Dumka describes my recording precisely. You’ll hear Tchaikovsky’s famous “Dumka”, both the painful sections as well as the happy. The Russian master’s “Romance” is also heard as well as other seldom played compositions by composers such as Glinka and Borodin.
I am also very proud to announce that I am featuring works by seldom-heard Russian woman composers — Ella Adayevsky and Tatiana Nikolayeva, who is known as a great pianist of our time. This music, I feel as mesmerising as it is generating life! Through this program that is close to my heart with its lyricism, but also the strength of his character, I like to think that I am helping to get out of the crisis, bringing Beauty and Good to all!
I am proud to partner with the internationally acclaimed Callope label in this project. Their motto “The passion for music and the commitment of Excellence” describes them preciously. Existing for 50 years, from London to Tokyo to Paris, Calliope works with the world’s leading composers and performers to offer exceptional recordings and offer the best of classical music to a demanding and passionate audience. The artistic director & sound engineer Frédéric Briant has collaborated with various labels including Erato & Decca, and worked with artists such as Nathalie Dessay & Nicolas Angelich.
