Cheeky Unts is a charity-driven NFT project built on the Cardano blockchain. The Season One “Road Trip” release dropped on October 22nd and was a resounding success. By the time the mint was completed, we had raised over $50,000AUD for Australian conservation, with $25,000AUD going to the Adelaide Koala & Wildlife Centre.

What is the Adelaide Koala & Wildlife Centre?

Adelaide Koala & Wildlife Centre is a non-profit organization made up of a team of dedicated professionals and volunteers working to save and improve the lives of wildlife.

Its goal is to provide a safe space for wildlife to be treated, rehabilitated and released. Most of the animals treated at the Wildlife Centre have been injured or became ill and orphaned from their natural environment.

In addition to providing treatment and care for estranged animals, they also are active in research and academia related to Australian wildlife. Their specialization is in koala research, specifically in medical treatment and rehabilitation methods.

Education and imparting knowledge to the public is an important method to secure the future of Australian wildlife. Adelaide is actively involved with education and awareness programs for young school students, veterinary students, volunteers and the general public.

What kind of treatment is the Wildlife Centre known for?

While the Adelaide Koala & Wildlife Centre is known for its work with koala bears, they help out any Aussie animal in need. They’ve been known to work on reptiles, kangaroos and birds. They boast more than a 50% rate of release into the wild, almost unheard of in other parts of the world.

Shell rot in both aquatic and landlocked turtles is a common way to describe a multitude of shell infections. The Centre has a process for identifying, treating and healing various shell rots that they run across. This treatment includes a pharmacy-grade bath to remove bacteria, antibiotics to fight off any infection and topical applications to help the rot from coming back.

How much does it cost to run the Wildlife Centre, and how do they receive funding?

Saving at-risk wildlife and educating the public about best practices is not an easy feat. It takes staff with immense amounts of education and facilities that are equipped with state of the art technology.

It cost over $200,000AUD to maintain the Adelaide Koala & Wildlife Centre in 2019.

Funding comes from generous benefactors like the Hutt family, large donations from the public and state-sponsored grants.
