Cheeky Unts Origin Story
Cheeky Unts is a charity-driven NFT project built on the Cardano blockchain.
The Season One “Road Trip” release dropped on October 22nd and was a resounding success. By the time the mint was completed, we had raised over $50,000AUD for Australian conservation groups like Adelaide Koala & Wildlife Centre and the Wombat Awareness Organization.
The drop coincided with World Wombat Day (we were just as surprised there was a whole day dedicated to wombat awareness!) and the Cheeky Unts played a significant role in their goal of raising $150,000.
Cheeky Unts Origin Story
The team started as two from Bitgem 3D and then we roped in a couple of mates to help with the dev side of things. Jason is the big kahuna that kept the wheels on, Matthias is our 3D + Pixel art savant, Lance is another brilliant artist and developer that breathed life into the website and Gaurav did the heavy lifting by creating our collection and minting process.
The name Cheeky #unts came as a play on words as one of us Aussie’s most famous terms of endearment…calling someone an…well you can fill in the blanks. If you need a little help you can replace the # with a C and you completed the puzzle! We knew that
A Unt/#unt is our family-friendly take on a common bit of Aussie/NZ slang that tourists might find offensive. If you need a little help you can replace the # with a C and you completed the puzzle! For us Aussie’s it is a term of endearment but when we’re trying to take over the world we have to clean it up a bit.
We knew that we wanted to avoid being the typical Ethereum based NFT project for two main reasons. The first and most important reason is that Ethereum mining is horrid for the environment. Our whole purpose is to raise money to help protect Aussie ecosystems. The second reason is based on the sky-high gas fees generated during minting transactions. We don’t think that our community should have to pay an arm and a leg to mint our NFTs.
Our Unts are made up of all the animals you think of when visiting Australia; kangaroo, koala, dingo, wombat, crocodile, quokka, penguin, platypus, seal, shark, octopus, Tasmanian devil, Tasmanian tiger, drop bear and bunyip.
