It may have reached sub-zero temperatures in Ontario the last few weeks, but here’s a reason to haul yourself out from under the blankets: ‘tis the season for delicious holiday menus. Whether they’re cooking up traditional fare or something slightly more experimental, Toronto-area restaurants have been inspired by the snow, the lights, and the general merriment, and are responding by putting out audacious, exciting additions to their menus — or additional menus entirely — just in time for the holiday season.

Here are some of the menus and menu items that have us pulling on our winter coats and heading out for dinner this holiday season:

Miku

Miku, a hot new sushi restaurant in downtown Toronto — and a Vancouver export — has a stunning holiday prix fixe menu as well as a slew of holiday cocktails, champagne, wine and sake features. The holiday menu is pricey — $80 per person — but it includes an elaborate seafood platter comprised of wakame kaisen poke, oyster shooters, scallop crudo, chef’s choice of sashimi, and more; a choice of delicious entrees; a selection of sushi; and a delectable-sounding buche de noel made of flourless chocolate sponge, manjari chocolate mousse, Abujiro Ginjo sour cherry, chocolate arare and pistachio ice cream. Add in the featured holiday cocktail — the Miku Negroni topped off with a thyme sprig — and you have yourself the perfect Japanese-style holiday meal.

Momofuku Daisho

For those who don’t celebrate Christmas, or who don’t celebrate at home, Momofuku Daisho is serving an enticing-looking family-style Christmas dinner on the eve of December 24th. The menu is prix fixe and $75 per person , and it includes a smoked pork ham, several Momofuku favorites like chicken buns and roasted carrot salad, some traditional holiday sides like pomme puree and stuffing, and an apple cobbler for dessert. The stunning view from the Shangri-La Hotel and the elegant atmosphere make it even more worth it.

The Drake Hotel

Sometimes the unknown is the most alluring, and it’s even more so the case when it comes to restaurants we know serve excellent food. That is certainly true when it comes to The Drake Hotel’s Festivus Dinner on Christmas Day. The Drake’s website seems reticent about what exactly will be served — it lists only a “traditional holiday dinner with all the fixings” — but given the consistently excellent food at The Drake, we know whatever they serve will be sure to wow. And at $34 per person, the price is right, too.

TOCA

For diners who like cheese and foie gras with their holiday wine, TOCA, located in the Ritz-Carlton in downtown Toronto, is featuring a stunning, pared-down Christmas menu on Christmas Eve and Day. One can always expect elegance, fine food and excellent service at TOCA, and their Christmas offerings appear to be no exception. The four-course menu includes a charcuterie and cheese platter, a choice of foie gras or lobster to start, then a choice of whole roast turkey, filet mignon, or branzino. Finally, dinner is finished off with a dessert table that’s sure to impress and a selection from TOCA’s cheese cave. Dinner is $105 prix fixe per person.
