Chegg.org joins Richard Sherman’s Blanket Coverage Christmas to give Bay Area families a special holiday experience
by: Lila Thomas, Head of Chegg.org
The landscape for students is ever-changing. With the compound impact of both the rising cost of education and the rising costs of living, individuals and their families across our country are bearing a significant burden. One of the many results of this burden is that students are giving up food in order to pay for housing and their education. They are literally choosing between eating or reading. Our 2018 State of the Student Report showed that one in three college students find it difficult or impossible to know where their next meal is coming from and it was that research that inspired us to take action. The newly launched Chegg.org is focusing on these specific issues — issues that students have told us are the biggest concerns for them in their pursuit of higher education, because we want to show the world who the modern student really is and what challenges they face.
This year at Chegg, we have primarily focused our efforts around food insecurity right here in Silicon Valley, where our headquarters is based. We know first-hand how the rising cost of living in the Bay Area is affecting our community. It’s why we are supporting Second Harvest Food Bank on their large-scale plan of implementing new systems to help even more people, with other companies like Cisco, ServiceNow, NetApp, and more. It is also why we are thrilled to support Richard Sherman, NFL cornerback for the San Francisco 49ers, while his Blanket Coverage Foundation provides another Blanket Coverage Christmas for 175 families here in the Bay Area.
Sherman’s heart for giving and service has been evident throughout his career, as shown through recent examples of him paying off the school lunch debt of several schools, including Cabrillo Middle School in Santa Clara, CA, and six public schools in Tacoma, WA. Given Sherman’s dedication to supporting students, as seen through the mission of his foundation and his support of food insecurity in schools, we wanted to add to his Blanket Coverage Christmas by donating grocery gift cards to all of the families.
“We are honored to support Richard Sherman’s fantastic work through his foundation” said Heather Hatlo Porter, Chief Communications Officer of Chegg. “His passion and commitment to supporting the community is truly inspiring, and we hope to add an extra level of comfort as these families plan their holiday meals. Richard is bringing so much joy through Blanket Coverage Christmas this holiday season and we are thrilled to be a part of it.”
“Chegg truly understands the impact that the rising costs of living, housing, and food has on the community, especially students and families with individuals attending school,” said Richard Sherman. “I am thrilled they raised their hand to provide extra grocery gift cards as an additional surprise for these families.”
Through the launch of Chegg.org, we are able to partner with organizations and influencers, like Richard Sherman, to impact students in new ways. We have also been able to release a policy report that addresses the nation’s student debt crisis, and publish research reports outlining some of the major issues college students face on a day-to-day basis.
This holiday season, we hope you find something close to your heart to give to — whether that means donating to a cause you care about or giving your time to serve others. As we go into the new year, we also hope you keep your eye on Chegg.org — we are on a mission to advocate for students, both here at home and around the country, and we are just getting started.
Chegg.org supports many initiatives that directly address the issues modern students face, including the First Down, College Bound Scholarship created in partnership with the Chegg.org Impact Fund and the San Francisco 49ers. For more information and to apply, please visit www.49ers.com/chegg.
