Devon Dotson, a 6-foot-2 guard that played for the Kansas Jayhawks, was signed by the Bulls shortly after the 2020 NBA Draft according to Adrian Wojnarowski.

Though he was undrafted, Dotson was the star of his Kansas Jayhawks team that went 28–3 last season and was projected to compete for a National Title prior to the season shutting down due to COVID-19.

The 6-foot-2 point guard averaged a brilliant 18.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 2.1 steals per game and was known for his quickness and ability to get to the basket at will. Dotson also consistently showcased the ability to finish through contact as a nice share of his scoring came from in the paint.

Dotson was expected to be drafted in the second round but teams may have been hesitant to select him because of his small size for the modern NBA. Another concern was likely his subpar 3-point shooting. In his sophomore year, Dotson shot only 30.9% from 3-point range after shooting 36.3% in his freshman year. Many experts think he may have trouble guarding the bigger NBA level guards, especially those who can come close to matching his agility.

Regardless, Dotson is a well-coached prospect and his two years with Hall of Fame head coach Bill Self were enough to turn him into a unanimous second-team AP All-American. And the only reason Dotson didn’t make first-team All-America is that he and teammate Udoka Azubuike took votes from each other due to their squad being so dominant.

Overall, the Bulls are getting a great hometown guy and adding some well-needed point guard depth, as he might be playing more with the Windy City Bulls. After the news of the signing Bill Self left some remarks.

“He’s [Devon Dotson] from Chicago and their G League team is in Chicago,” Self said. “I think that would be a big bonus to have something close as far as the opportunity to still be a part of the organization and be in the same city. We’ll see how all that plays out.”
