Lauri Markkanen is not like your average 22-year-old NBA player. The young, 7-foot Finnish star has been in the midst of a tough season with the Chicago Bulls but that hasn’t stopped him from his continued dedication to educating the world about climate change.

Markkanen has collaborated with Finnish renewables company Neste to raise awareness with a series of ‘weather dunks’ that will be launched in various cities with a history of extreme weather. The Bulls are playing the Sixers in Philadelphia on Friday, January 17, 2020. Thus Markkanen and Neste launched “BLIZZARD”, named as such because Philadelphia is ‘known for its disastrous blizzards’, with the coldest temperature ever recorded in Philadelphia being -7 °F (-22,7 °C) in 1984 (according to Neste).

The other dunks will be called: Hurricane, flash flood, heat wave, and wildfire.

Neste and Markkanen will continue to be very active in trying to raise awareness of the rising temperatures worldwide that have caused extreme weather. For each point that Markkanen scores in five preselected games this NBA season, Neste will donate $1,000 for disaster relief.

As of this writing, Lauri Markkanen is averaging 15 points and 6.6 rebounds on 42.4% from the field and 35.2% from 3-point range. Bulls faithful can feel even better about their young star, knowing that many of those points are contributing to a great cause that he truly is passionate about.
