Monet and Chicago (Until June 14, 2021)

The city of Chicago has a long history with Monet. In 1872, the city hosted Monet’s first solo exhibition in the United States, showcasing pieces owned by the many private donors who had become enchanted with his art through various prior gallery exhibitions. The Art Institute is home to 33 of Monet’s paintings and an additional 13 drawings, which is the most extensive collection of the artist’s work outside of Paris. If you are interested in impressionism or Monet’s unique history with the city, you should absolutely consider buying a ticket to this stunning exhibit.

Cosmoscapes: Ink Paintings by Tai Xiangzhou (Until September 20, 2021)

Tai Xiangzhou’s ink paintings, which combine traditional materials and techniques from the Song Dynasty with his love of modern science and beautiful, abstract concepts, are a must-see. They are a beautiful marriage of tradition and fantasy, transporting the viewer to Tai’s vision of the universe. Fourteen works are currently displayed at the Art Institute, including scrolls, screens, and album leaves. Anyone interested in traditional techniques is sure to be fascinated by this modern take on the art of an incredible historical era.

A New View of African Art (Ongoing)

Redesigned in 2019 with new lighting, spatial configuration, and improved informational displays, the Art Institute’s African Art Gallery is a must-see. The gallery incorporates and displays the many different art traditions practiced in different parts of the continent and explains each piece’s cultural and historical importance. There is also a section dedicated to the incredible textile and pottery produced throughout Africa, an overlooked form traditionally made by women. If you haven’t toured this part of the museum before, consider devoting your time to it on your next trip to the Art Institute.

Whatever kind of art you’re looking for, the Art Institute of Chicago will be able to provide you with an incredible and memorable experience that is sure to be one of the highlights of any visit to the city.
