Kranti Grant — Plans and Costs
Upon receiving the notification that our team received the grant money for continuing our work with Kranti, we were excited and honored to further pursue our partnership. We felt the social-emotional curriculum we developed to support the Kranti-graduate teachers in their efforts to expand mental health programming to marginalized youth from the surrounding Mumbai area was an important step that could bring structure and engagement to the courses. However, we also imagined some specific areas of improvement that could enhance the offering through use of the grant money.
In the past couple months, we have worked to refine these areas of improvement. Next steps focus on three primary areas. First, we have conceptualized and budgeted for a suite of video tutorials. At a higher level, these videos will will follow into two categories that map to the curriculum. We have three main units of the curriculum each of which will now include an overview video that discusses the unit approach, orientation, and importance of healthy social interactions, self-awareness, emotional expression. These overviews will be particularly useful for teachers when introducing the topics and transitioning to a new topic. These videos will include interviews and discussions on the topics.
The second category of videos will provide clarification, details, and instructions on specific exercises and lessons at a more granular level. These small instructional videos will target key areas of importance and/or difficulty regarding the lesson content. Whiteboard videos and step-by-step demonstrations will be incorporated to help visualize the coordination of group activities in order to provide clarity and support to instructors for some of the more complicated exercises and activities.
Initially, we have budgeted half of the grant allotment to video production, rental, crew, and whiteboard animations. We anticipate this will be adequate given our access to New School resources, participants, and equipment.
For the remaining half of the grant money, we plan to create a website that can be used to increase visibility for the program and curriculum through distribution across the Kranti organization, as well as to external stakeholders. The site will allow for an integration of the written curriculum and video content. It will also support feedback, questions, and testimonials, and provide updates to the curriculum. The bulk of the grant money for this portion will be used towards graphic design and an annual subscription to host the site.
Finally, once the first set of classes has been completed, we intend to support Kranti in their evaluation of the program through their existing assessment self-report measure for the youth to complete at the beginning, middle, and end phases of the curriculum. We would like to help expand their assessment by adapting this measure to be a teacher report. We will analyze the data collected by these measures in order to examine change over time and understand the efficacy of the curriculum. We will then make any necessary adjustments to our curriculum based on the findings as well the feedback from our partner and the Krantikari teachers. We expect the financial costs of the portion to be minimal.
