Hey there,
Today is Mother’s Day for those living in North America. I felt rather indifferent about the day for years after my mother passed. As I began to advocate for the childfree choice, the day brought up some angst. I noticed how people who didn’t like their mothers were posting praise. That took me down a rabbit hole of conversations about obligatory love. But, this newsletter is not a “Mother’s Day” post. It’s a celebration of all the cool things in the childfree community.

We’ll explore how the traditional retirement plan that we are taught from a young age doesn’t fit childfree individuals and why retirement is a choice for us. As childfree individuals, instead of following the Standard Life Plan, we have the option to choose a different path. Instead of pursuing retirement we can pursue FILE or Financial Independence Live Early as an alternative. We’ll delve into what FI or Financial Independence means and how it can be achieved prior to the typical retirement age of 65.

It would be unsurprising if I were called ageist for writing this, or if someone were to tell me it was cruel or judgmental to say such things about a man who just had a baby, because that’s how we view having children in this country — having them is always good, always right, no matter what the circumstances (black plague? plague babies!). It’s how we are.
And that we are that way should seem, to anyone with empathy for children, unusually cruel, considering it is the children who will suffer the conditions we selfishly bring them into.
