Cats find any form of travelling stressful because they are being taken out of their territory. Even a short trip to the vets can prove testing for both cat and owner. This is because travelling exposes cats to new smells and noises which can be frightening and unsettling for them.

One way of making this ordeal easier for your cat is to spot key signs of stress. These include:

You can help alleviate this stress with these simple steps:

Never let your cat roam free in the car. Make sure they’re in a well-ventilated, spacious carrier that’s big enough for them to stand up and move around in. It’s a good idea to keep a towel at the bottom of the carrier in case of any accidents.

Leave this travel basket out in the home for a few days before travelling. This allows them time to become familiar with the carrier.

Place their favourite blanket or one that smells of them in the carrier to help them feel connected to it.

On the day of travel do not feed your cat six hours before departure. This will help your cat avoid any nausea or vomiting caused by motion sickness. Don’t forget to make sure your cat still has access to water though.

Before setting out on your journey apply one spray of Feliway into each corner of your cat’s carrier. Remember not to spray your cat. Wait 15 minutes before introducing your cat to the carrier. This will allow the alcohol to evaporate.
