In the Netherlands, its normal to pay separately while on a date. That’s why it’s called Going Dutch when you split a bill. However that’s not the case here in India. The expectations are a little different when people go out in a group. The elder of the family, the rich dude in a group of friends and recently due to the impact of demonetisation — whoever is carrying CASH would mostly be paying.

The problem here is that in most cases the person who pays feels awkward asking the others to pay up their share. To avoid this awkward moment and enable easier settlements we decided to create a solution making the whole process of lending and splitting bills seamless for our users.

All you need to do is 3 simple steps

  1. Select friends
  2. Enter amount
  3. Manage the split

You can select any friend in your phone contacts whether they are already registered on Chillr or not. If they are not on Chillr we will send them expense updates through SMS with an invite link having your referral code. Managing the split is usually where all the hard math is involved and yet we make it look so easy for you.

How to log an expense

Gentleman Split : Equally split an expense between participants

Lets consider a real scenario where a group of 4 friends decide to go for Baahubali 2. One of them books tickets online for Rs 1000. See below how this can be logged easily. Requests are sent to the other 3 friends instantly. Skip to the bottom if you're in a hurry to find out how to get the money back.

Married Split : Where man pays for the wife or vice versa

Now let’s assume the case of 2 married couples in the group. That makes a total of 6 people changing the amount to 250x6=1500, however, this time it’s not an equal split. Here we bring in the concept of shares. That makes it easy to split the amount without involving the spouse(s) into it.

Invisible Split

In an unrelated scenario, if you booked tickets for another group of friends because you had access to an exclusive offer. In this situation you can remove yourself from the split by hitting the ‘-’ button to the left of your profile picture. The split amounts will automatically get adjusted between the rest of your friends.

Settle Up

Splitting the bill is the easy part. Settling up is the tough one and we have just the solution you need here. As soon as the split is done we inform all participants through push notifications (SMS for non-chillr users). For friends who forget about the money owed, we have the REMIND option which helps you notify the user again without having to call them and ask the awkward “Can you send me the money you owe me?” question.

Unequal splits are sometimes confusing and to solve this we’ve done 2 things.

Add Bills and forget the details

Click on the attach button to the right of the amount field to add an image as bill.

All participants on the expense will be able to view this bill and verify the split.

Add comments

In case the bill is absent or confusing, you can clarify by adding comments.

P.S Smileys are supported :)

What if somebody pays cash?

If one of your friends chooses to settle the expense using cash you can mark them as settled manually and keep your logs clean.

How to create a log if I wasn't the one who paid?

This is WIP now and we'll be coming out with this soon.
